Contribution to the Cajal Legacy: Santiago Ramon y Cajal was not only a scientific genius; he was a supreme example of austerity and moral rectitude in the use of public funds. Antonio Arias takes up that essential ethical baton. From the institutions of oversight (Courts of Auditors), he has devoted his life to defending the principle that transparency and integrity are the best science policy. His intellectual work, reflected in his influential blog Fiscalizacion.es, constantly reminds us that, as Don Santiago said, “honesty is the only aristocracy” (“la honradez es la unica aristocracia”), and that without impeccable public management, the progress of the nation is impossible.
