On Thursday 16 April 2026, el Palacio de Congresos y Exposiciones de Castilla y León acoge la tercera edición del Salamanca por Cajal, the annual event connecting Santiago Ramón y Cajal’s legacy with the science and technology of the present. The event is part of the Salamanca Tech Summit 2026 (15-17 de abril) under the motto «Ramón y Cajal: El faro que ilumina el futuro».

Her mother, the III Marquesa, lived with Don Santiago until she was 15.
Cajal’s Legacy, More Alive Than Ever
Santiago Ramón y Cajal no fue solo el padre de la neurociencia. Fue también el director del Instituto Nacional de Higiene Alfonso XIII desde 1899 — precursor del actual Instituto de Salud Carlos III —, where he achieved Spain’s sanitary sovereignty in vaccines and serums, and developed the first chemically inactivated vaccine during the 1885 cholera epidemic in Valencia. Sus manuales de Histología y Anatomía Patológica fueron los libros de texto más utilizados en las facultades de medicina españolas durante décadas, e incluían observaciones pioneras sobre el cáncer que la ciencia tardó décadas en redescubrir. Su hijo Jorge continuó ese legado fundando el THIRF en 1918, germen de la industria farmacéutica española moderna.
Hoy, 90 años después de su muerte, el nombre de Cajal viaja a la Luna.
